FAQ

WHERE DO YOU GET THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR RECIPES?

1. Restaurants
2. Cookbooks
3. Cooking shows
4. Friends and family
5. Pinterest

WHO IS AJ?

My taste-tester, sous chef, and one and only true love.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM EXACTLY?

I’m half Kuwaiti, half Palestinian. I grew up between the Kingdom of Bahrain, Kuwait, and the United Kingdom. I moved to the USA in 2001 for college; the plan was to move back to Kuwait upon completion of my Bachelor’s degree. Little did I know that I’d fall in love with a native, marry him, and make this country my new home.

CAN I USE YOUR PHOTO OR RECIPE ON MY WEBSITE OR BLOG?

I work very hard to provide you with unique content. If you’re sharing my recipe or my photography, then please include the link to the recipe as well as the link to my homepage. For example: This awesome recipe for Chipotle Chicken Pasta can be found at Thyme and Tamarind.

DID YOU GO TO CULINARY SCHOOL?

No, I have no formal training in the culinary arts. I have a bachelors in Interior Design from ASU (Go Devils!) and a Masters of Fine Arts from Purdue University (Boiler up!). I have a love for all things beautiful, including art, graphics, fashion, and food.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH ALL OF THE FOOD THAT YOU MAKE?

Left-overs! Lots and lots of left-overs. I usually pack a meal for my co-workers, family, friends, and neighbors! They don’t seem to mind.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE RECIPE?

My favorite recipe has not been posted yet (ohhh suspense!). AJ can no longer keep up with his favorites, but he seems to have a soft spot for my Chipotle Chicken Pasta

WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DO YOU USE?

I use a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi. I’m looking to upgrade my toy, but before I do that, I’ll be testing out a few cameras/lenses from Borrow Lenses to determine what works best for my needs. I’d love to hear your recommendations.  My wonderful husband surprised me with a Canon EOS Rebel T5i Digital SLR! As of September 2014, all of my food photos have been shot with my new Rebel T5i (all posts prior to September 2014 were shot with the Rebel XTi).  I’m still learning how to use my new camera, but so far I’m so impressed with the quality and ease of use. Tips and tricks are welcome :)

WHAT KIND OF LENS DO YOU USE?

I have three lenses! I’ve noted how I use them below:
1. Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II - I use this lens 80% of the time. I love this lens because you can get really close shots of the food and great depth of field. It’s also the least expensive of all my lenses! Yay!
2. Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II - I use this lens 20% of the time. It’s great for when you’re limited with space and need to zoom in and out to capture your staged set (unlike the 50mm f/1.8, which is fixed). I use this mostly to capture bird’s-eye views of my food.
3. Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS II Telephoto Zoom Lens- This one is reserved for my travel! The number one reason you will want to use a telephoto zoom lens is to get close to a subject when you either can’t or shouldn’t (like on Safari in Kenya, when a lion and lioness are on their honeymoon - read:mating - and you can’t step out of the Jeep for a closer look, so you use your camera lens as binoculars. True story.)
